Spruz Longevity

Hi - I want to ask Spruz users a question. Do you feel that Spruz will be around for the long haul? I used Ning before their price platform changed. I have used Wordpress with a buddypress/bbpress install. I am currently using Elgg self hosted as a Social Network site but having to dig into my ftp every time I want to make a tiny change drives me nuts, especially because it's not an active site and I find it hard to justify all the effort I put into it  just to keep it kicking.

Spruz has some great features and I don't have an issue paying 5/month when it saves me searching for compatible plugins after upgrades (Elgg/WP) but I would hate to bug members to come over and join me here and then have Spruz close shop. I have a hard time trusting non self hosted sites - but love the lack of work. What are your thoughts?

  • I was also on NING for a l-o-n-g time.  I've been here for a little over a year although I still keep in contact with a few close friends on NING through NING Creators such as Jen, Koz and John.  However, SPRUZ meets my small network needs.  The owners here are great!  Also, if you ever run across Randy (really helps immensely in the Help Forum here he's a gem and knowledgeable.  Do I believe they're in for the long haul?  YES!

Hi Birch. I've been on the Spruz platform since 2009, so roughly 5 years now. I have gained a bit of insight and experience over the years a number of ways. I've owned several sites, but now my main focus is Spruzstuff, a website that offers tips, code snippets, plugins, and theme designs for Spruz website owners. I've also spent some time as a customer support rep for Spruz, and handled many of the support tickets, phone calls, and chat when it was offered at one point.

Things I've noticed over the years are that customers are always coming in. That's probably the number one indicator of any businesses longevity. Another solid example would be that updates are being released. The last one was just a few months ago, and they are typically updates that focus on future proofing the Spruz platform in one way or another. Making the sites more mobile friendly was the last update released. Based on what I've seen, dialogue that I've had with the owners of Spruz, and the demand for this type of technology, I'd say the Longevity for the Spruz platform is looking very good.

    I hope this helps :)

  • Thank you Cautious and Randy -

The fact that this post was answered makes me hopeful. :) I am always wary of non self hosted because if the site closes down then I'm forced to start over again somewhere else, and in this day and age of Facebook, it's hard to build up a committed non FB community. So if I am successful in doing that i dont want to start over.

BuddyPress/BBpress is great if one wants to constantly update everything themselves and ning is great if i want to fork out a lump sum of money --- ive been trying to find something in between and I hope this is what Ive been looking for :)

  • shcen - wordpress is entirely different. It's a blogging website primarily that you then can use plug ins with to increase functionality. It is either obtained vi wordpress.com for a hosted version or self hosted at wordpress.org. Spruz is a social networking service. You can write blogs from within spruz, invite people to join your site and communicate about shared interests - but wordpress doesn't really fit into that unless there's something new at WP that im unaware of :D
