Spam Block

Editing the post for a more courteous rant --

This refers to Expanded Spam Prevention "We have added a new layer of protection that checks content added by members for spam characteristics.  When this is detected the offending member account will be flagged as a Spam account account and their access restricted."

  • What do you mean by auto block? Describe what happens when someone posts to the "Forums". Also, which feature are you referring to? Discussions or the older discontinued  Forums feature?

  • Posting HTML in response to a question caused an immediate block of the account in support forums. See above post.

  • It's pretty standard practice for social networks and other sites to block out code entries entirely and not let them be sent to the server, so the fact that code entry is even allowed is above and beyond what you will see in most general purpose websites, which is what Spruz is. The reason that coding would ban someone is simple. That is a sure fire trigger that someone could potentially be hacking your website. That's also the same reason you will find you can't post code period on many other websites. SQL Injection for example is very nasty, and submitting code through a form such as in the forums is exactly how it's done. As well, finding ways to break your layout on your site is another potential threat. It's extremely easy to do, so much so that many people may even do it accidentally.

I can relate to how you feel on this, because my site is entirely all about coding and not a lot else. But I also understand that 99% of the sites on the Spruz platform are not about coding and have no need for it, and instead they are built by beginners who found themselves here because they aren't experts in coding. The biggest part of the customer base for that reason would likely rather see their site secure, rather than open up a potential security hole. Putting a flag on people who post coding, and then making the website administrator remove that block if deemed fit is an intelligent solution for the biggest majority of people.

From experience in programming the back end of websites in Php and Mysql now, this is just my opinion of course, and not that of Spruz. You could ask them in a support ticket though to find out for sure what their reasoning is.

  • Thanks for the response, Randy, and sorry for the delay in reply, but Spruz now has us blocked nine ways from Sunday, and it will be impossible for the blocked account to file a support request.

As far as posting code, I think the obvious work around is to just use an image and post that instead of inserting the offending code.

I've been on this owners' forum for some years now. I've been present for all the rants and problems we've been through. I've even seen law suits generated by Spruz management's ham-handed tactics. I really wish that they would consider the effect their actions have on the customer before they pull some of the things they do.

If we still had premium accounts with Spruz and they blocked us so we couldn't file a support request, would they still be drawing fees from our accounts? Probably so. The Ardent Group had four premium accounts with Spruz, but none now. And this was all because of some crazy stunt that Spruz management has pulled. I'm more patient than some of our leaders, and that's why we still have any at all.

I was considering restoring some of the premium accounts, but every time I do, Spruz guys do something like this crazy block. Being blocked prevents any payments from being paid anyway, so I think Spruz has made the decision for us.
