If you have tried to get Google to recognize your ownership of a site, you may have experienced some of my frustration. Google's bot seems to have very poor parsing ability, and will constantly fail to see the Google supplied meta tag. What I found was this:
If you put the tag in like so:
Then the header scripting looks like this:
And Google simply can't see the meta for some reason. But if you put the meta tag on line 2 of the custom scripting box, the editor will correct it, but you will get this in the page header:
Note the spacing between the style and meta tags. And then I got this:
