Click on manage site, settings, manage settings, and there at the top, you'll see where you can change the settings from public to private.
Also if you click on manage site, and then go to any of your pages, there will be a page option button that you can click. If you set the access level of your pages to 1 except for your homepage that you want everyone to see, you can do things that way and still have a main homepage instead of people just seeing the login page itself when not signed in.
